The Story Behind Any Toll, Any Road
“Any Toll, Any Road” is one of Ken Goodwin’s most personal and emotionally powerful songs.
The inspiration for the song began with a moment that many locals in Ventura County would recognize, a drive down the Conejo Grade from Newbury Park into Camarillo along the U.S. 101 Freeway. At the bottom of the grade sits the Camarillo Springs Road exit, where a road winds up into the hills beside the freeway.
According to Goodwin, that simple visual sparked the idea that would eventually become the song.
“I was coming down the Conejo Grade from Newbury Park into Camarillo and there’s a road off the freeway, Camarillo Springs Road, that winds up into the hills. For a moment it looked like a road that could lead straight up to Heaven.”
At the time, Goodwin had already lost his father in February of 2014. The image of that road stayed with him and gradually took on deeper meaning.
“I had already lost my dad back in February of 2014, and that image stuck with me. I kept thinking about how far someone would go just to see a loved one again.”
That feeling ultimately became the heart of the song and its defining lyric:
“If there really was a road like that, a road that could take you back to someone you love, most of us wouldn’t hesitate. We’d pay any toll, take any road.”
While the song was inspired by Goodwin’s own experience losing his father, he says the meaning of the song goes far beyond that one story.
“It started with my dad, but the song is really for anyone who has lost someone they love — a parent, a spouse, a child, or a friend. That feeling of wanting just one more moment is something almost everyone understands.”
“Any Toll, Any Road” captures that universal longing, the idea that if there were any path that could lead back to someone we’ve lost, we would take it without hesitation.
It’s a song about grief, love, and the miles we would travel for one more moment.
