The Story Behind Every Sunrise Costs a Sunset

Sometimes inspiration comes from the most unexpected places.

Every Sunrise Costs a Sunset began with a simple thought about time: every new day we’re given is also one less day we have.

For songwriter Ken Goodwin, that realization has become more meaningful with age. Life has a way of making time feel endless when we’re young. We assume there will always be another day, another conversation, another chance to say what we meant to say. But as the years pass, and we experience both the joy of new beginnings and the pain of saying goodbye, time begins to feel different.

That idea became the foundation for the title: “Every Sunrise Costs a Sunset.”

A sunrise represents another chance, another day to live, love, forgive, laugh, make memories, and be present with the people who matter. But every sunrise eventually gives way to a sunset. The beauty of having another day comes with the understanding that none of us gets an unlimited number of them.

As the song developed, that idea began weaving through each line: every hello ends in goodbye, we’re living on borrowed days and borrowed time, and ultimately, what we leave behind isn’t what we owned or accomplished  it’s the love we gave and the impact we had on the people around us.

“The older I get, the more aware I am of how quickly time moves. You spend so much of life thinking there will always be more of it. I wanted to write something that reminded me and hopefully other people not to wait to appreciate the day or the people in it. Every sunrise is a gift, but it comes with a sunset.”

— Ken Goodwin, Goodwin Made

At its core, Every Sunrise Costs a Sunset isn’t meant to be a song about dying. It’s a song about living.

It’s about holding onto the moments we’re given, saying the words that matter while we still can, and understanding that the temporary nature of life is part of what makes it so valuable.

Because maybe the price of one more day is knowing it can’t last forever and maybe that’s exactly what makes every sunrise worth being grateful for.
