The Story Behind 'Missing My Baby'
“Missing My Baby” was written from a place of deep empathy and heartbreak.
The song was inspired by an employee who is a mother and who experienced the unimaginable loss of her 12-year-old son in March of 2025. He had been struggling quietly, facing bullying at school, and his passing left a grief no words can fully hold. Witnessing the weight of that loss deeply affected Ken Goodwin, both as a father and as a leader who cares deeply about the people he works alongside.
Rather than attempting to explain the pain, the song was written to acknowledge it, to give voice to the overwhelming sadness, guilt, anger, confusion, and lifelong ache many parents carry after losing a child.
The emotional center of the song comes in the bridge:
“He whispers, ‘Your baby’s with Me…
And this wasn’t yours to outrun."
These words speak to the crushing self-blame so many parents experience, the belief that they should have seen it, prevented it, or somehow changed the outcome. The whisper in the lyric is meant to offer grace where guilt often takes over.
Goodwin explains his inspiration:
The lyric reflects the tension between heartbreak and hope, the struggle to make sense of loss while still holding onto love.
Goodwin shares what inspired him to write the song:
“Watching a mother on our team walk through something so unimaginable changes you. As a father, I kept thinking about the depth of her love and the strength it takes to keep going. I wanted to write something that honored that love and created space for compassion.”
The song was released on March 4, the anniversary of his employee’s son’s passing, in remembrance of a young life deeply loved and in honor of every family walking the difficult road of child loss.
If the song opens space for empathy, meaningful conversations about bullying and mental health, or helps even one family feel seen, then it has fulfilled its purpose.
